LIONESSES REVVED UP

-

ENGLAND are eager to shine at Euro 2017 to start a revolution in how the women’s game is viewed at home.

Mark Sampson’s Lionesses kick off their campaign in Utrecht tomorrow night against Scotland before tackling Spain and Portugal in their group.

And having witnessed the opening game on Sunday when hosts Holland beat Norway in front of a 21,732 crowd – including Dutch royalty – they are determined to see a similar reaction in England.

“The atmosphere was fantastic,” said Reading midfielder Jade Moore (left), who was so caught up in it she joined in a Mexican wave.

Now it is England’s turn and Moore added: “You could not have chosen a better game for us to start a championship.

“We’re happy with Scotland first, it’s the one I looked forward to when the draw was made.”

Despite increasing commitment from top clubs such as Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, average attendances in the FA Women’s Super League remain stubbornly low at under 1,200.

The FA are switching to a top-flight winter league, partly in an attempt to increase gates.

And a strong showing in Holland would be the perfect launchpad.
