WAYNE SUPREME ON REDS BEHALF

- FROM DAVID McDONNELL in Salt Lake City

WAYNE ROONEY will be offered an ambassadorial role by Manchester United – despite being given the boot. Rooney’s record-breaking United career came to an end earlier this month when he returned to boyhood club Everton after 13 years at Old Trafford. The England forward was released with a year left on his contract after becoming a peripheral figure under Jose Mourinho. Rooney eclipsed Sir Bobby Charlton as United’s record scorer in his final season at the club, plundering 253 goals to set a total that is unlikely to be surpassed. And Rooney’s emphatic contribution to their rich history is set to rewarded with a global ambassadorial role once the 31-year-old retires from playing.

The role was included as part of Rooney’s last United deal, signed in 2014, although it is no longer a contractual right now he has returned to Everton.

But sources close to Rooney have confirmed that the offer of an ambassadorial role, travelling the world promoting United, is on the table once his playing days are over. He relinquished the United captaincy when he left Old Trafford, with veteran midfielder Michael Carrick handed the armband after signing up for another year.

But world record £89million signing Paul Pogba has emerged as the favourite to take over the captaincy when Carrick leaves, possibly next summer.

France midfielder Pogba is said to have impressed Reds’ boss Mourinho and his staff with his maturity and work ethic since his return to United, with those around the club tipping him as a future long-term skipper.
