Reds wait on Barkley

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

MANCHESTER UNITED will monitor Ross Barkley’s tense situation at Goodison Park as they consider a late transfer window swoop for the England star.

Barkley has undergone surgery on a groin injury, it was revealed yesterday, and will need four weeks to recover.

Everton’s £50million asking price and the 23-year-old’s £150,000-aweek wage demands have discouraged Tottenham and Chelsea.

But the current situation suits Jose Mourinho. The Old Trafford boss will maintain a watching brief on the attacking midfielder, and will prime United chiefs to pounce if the asking price is cut to a more attractive level.

At £20m or less, it would be a no-risk move for United, with the hope Barclay develops into the top-class international star his potential suggests.

Everton defender Ramiro Funes Mori will be out for at least nine months following knee surgery.

Blues boss Ronald Koeman is still pushing hard to land Gylfi Sigurdsson, despite Swansea’s £50m valuation.
