Tory: Austen ‘is still living’

TORY Andrea Leadsom provoked hilarity in Parliament yesterday after she called Jane Austen “one of our greatest living authors”

Ms Leadsom was welcoming the inclusion of the Pride and Prejudice writer, who died in 1817, on the new £10 note.

The Leader of the House said she was “delighted... one of our greatest living authors”. She said she meant to say “one of our greatest ever authors”.

She added: “A lot of us wish she were still living.”
