TOMMY FLEETWOOD said he let his gallery of local fans down after a disastrous opening 76 at Royal Birkdale.

The Southport-born star and world No.14 failed to make a single birdie in his bitterly disappointing six-over-par.

The 26-year-old (right) said: “It was great to have the support out there but I feel like I have disappointed them

“I will try my hardest tomorrow. I wasn’t far away at all but it looks really bad. The crowd were brilliant. They did their part, I just couldn’t quite do mine.”
