1884: Lord’s hosted its first Test when it staged the second match in a series between England and Australia. England won by an innings and five runs.

1964: Tottenham forward John White was killed when he was struck by lightning while sheltering from a storm during a round of golf at Crews Hill, Enfield.

1968: Arnold Palmer became the first man to win one million US dollars on the American golf tour when he tied for second place in the US PGA Championship at Pecan Valley, Texas.

2014: England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard announced he was retiring from international football.

England won a third Ashes Test by 18 runs at Headingley. Ian Botham took six wickets in Australia’s first innings and made 149 not out in England’s second.
