I’d like to offer a bit of advice to the reader who wrote in about her husband working abroad (Dear Coleen, July 14). Due to a lack of opportunities in the UK, my husband worked abroad from the second year of our marriage until my youngest child was in her twenties.

His job took him all over the world and, on several occasions, his firm paid for me and the children to fly out for a break with him. In those days, phone or email were the only ways to keep in touch.

We have been married for 43 years and his working away didn’t have any negative effects on us or our children. I agree – the worst part was adjusting to him being around when he was able to get home.

You have got to give it a try otherwise in the future you could be saying “what if”. Anon, via email
