Shock debt rise stuns the experts

-

MINISTERS borrowed £2billion more last month than in June 2016, figures show.

The total was £6.9billion. Experts had predicted £4.8billion.

The national debt of £1.75trillion is equivalent to 87.4% of gross domestic product or £65,000 for every household.

The Tories came to power in 2010 pledging to eliminate the Budget black hole by 2015.

But now PM Theresa May has vowed to clear it by the “middle of the next decade”.

Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said: “These figures reveal the continued failure of Philip Hammond and the Tories. Years of cuts have left our economy weaker.”
