Slow and error-strewn, surely Pep hasn’t signed ANOTHER blunder keeper

- FROM DAVID McDONNELL

PEP GUARDIOLA can only hope Ederson’s error-strewn performance on his City debut was a one-off.

Ederson, signed from Benfica for £35million, has come in to replace Claudio Bravo as City’s No.1, the decision to promote Bravo last season failing spectacularly.

Guardiola and his staff will obviously have done their scouting homework on Ederson, but the Brazilian did little to vindicate their faith in him.

Racing off his line in the first half, the 23-year-old was beaten to the ball by Romelu Lukaku, who compounded the keeper’s error by scoring from an outrageous angle.

Ederson was then beaten by Marcus Rashford with another angled shot (below), and he was almost caught out by the young England striker’s long-range effort after the break, eventually managing to tip the ball over. City’s keeper did make some decent saves, but Guardiola (below) needs stability between the posts this season after the farce of Bravo last term, and the decision to dispense with Joe Hart.

On the evidence of this game, Ederson may struggle to provide that.
