IT’S HIT AND MISS FOR O’MEARA

-

MARK O’MEARA says he will miss The Open after bowing out early in his final appearance.

The 1998 Open champion (left) was competing in the tournament for the final time after turning 60. He had a nightmare first round of 81, including an eight on the first, but responded with a 70 yesterday at Royal Birkdale, where he lifted the Claret Jug.

“This is the greatest championship and I will miss it,” said the American. “I know there are three other championships but the Open is top of my list. I felt the warmth of the crowd coming up the 18th hole. There is a little bit of life in the old dog and I just wanted to play respectable.”
