We can’t escape our virtual reality future, says Spielberg
STEVEN Spielberg has warned our future will be dominated by virtual reality “whether we like it or not”.
The director was discussing his new movie, Ready Player One.
The film shows a world where humans escape into virtual reality while living on a planet scarred by the effects of global warming.
Set in 2044, it is based on American novelist Ernest Cline’s book of the same name. Spielberg was speaking at the Comic-Con convention on popular culture in San Diego. He described the book as: “A flash forward to a future out there awaiting all of us whether we like it or not.” He added virtual reality allows the possibility of being able to do “anything you can imagine”. Spielberg said he left out references in the book to his past films, fearing it would be viewed as a “grand act of vanity”.
