Remote outpost of Britain is finally on the map

-

A REMOTE Scottish island that was the last place in Britain without an online Ordnance Survey map has at last got one.

The 30 residents of Foula, the most westerly of the Shetlands, have all been sent a copy. The island, three and a half miles long and full of wildlife, lies 107 miles east of the mainland and is nearer to Norway than Edinburgh.

Foula’s postal manager Sheila Gear said: “It was a pleasant surprise to receive the maps from OS and now be part of their story.

“Twenty years ago I helped their surveyors map the island.”

Foula stayed on the Julian calendar when Britain moved to the Gregorian in 1752 and Christmas Day falls on January 6.

With the isle now charted, the OS Custom Map service launched in 2011 covers the entire UK.
