1997: Ben Hogan, one of the greatest golfers of all time, died aged 84. He was the first man to win three majors in a calendar year (1953).
2006: Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn appointed himself as manager. He returned to the boardroom after overseeing five matches without a win.
