1997: Ben Hogan, one of the greatest golfers of all time, died aged 84. He was the first man to win three majors in a calendar year (1953).

2006: Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn appointed himself as manager. He returned to the boardroom after overseeing five matches without a win.

2015: Dina Asher-Smith became the first British woman to run the 100 metres in under 11 seconds at the Anniversary Games.

Lance Armstrong won his first Tour de France. He would go on to win seven straight titles but was later stripped of them all for doping offences.
