Tory war deal a blow to Yemen

If the recent heatwave occasionally got too much for you, spare a thought next month for the people of Yemen. Our hottest days would seem cool to them, and our thunderstorms would be a welcome relief as they get barely any rain in August.

All that in a country already experiencing a vicious war, an exploding cholera epidemic and desperate shortages of food, water and medicine.

It is already the worst humanitarian crisis in the world and respected figures are telling me it could become one of the worst in the last century. Getting relief to Yemen’s children is essential but that depends on securing a lasting peace. And what is the Tory plan to achieve that? To sell even more warplanes and weapons to Saudi Arabia in the hope they can finally win the war. It is a scandal that shames our country and heaven knows how many more innocent lives it will cost.
