LONG-SHOT WINS THE WRONG RACE
RACING was in chaos when an odds-on favourite was beaten by a horse that was in the wrong race.
Fyre Cay, the 4-6 favourite for the 1.40pm at Great Yarmouth, a race for two-year-olds, was
beaten in a photo by 50-1 rank outsider Mandarin Princess.
But it later emerged the winner was the three-year-old Millie’s Kiss, a stablemate of Mandarin Princess at trainer Charlie McBride’s yard.
Off-course bookmakers paid out on the beaten favourite but track punters were left out of pocket because bets are settled according to the weigh-in.
One irate punter said: “Horses are identified by microchips so for this to happen is beyond belief.”
A spokesman for one leading bookmaker said: “This is like a plot from a Dick Francis novel.”
McBride said: “I’ve been told to make no further comment.”
