RIYAD STILL ON ROAD TO ROMA

- BY JAMES NURSEY

ROMA are set to return with a new £32million bid for Riyad Mahrez who has continued his “first-class” pre-season form.

The winger has two goals ahead of the new season after coming on as a sub to score Leicester’s winner in a friendly at Luton on Wednesday night.

It was his second goal this month after also netting against West Brom in the Premier League Asia Trophy.

But the Algeria star, 26, wants out after telling the Foxes he wanted to quit at the end of last season. And Roma are in pole position for his signature. But the Italian club’s initial offer of £20m for the former PFA Player of the Year was turned down by Leicester.

Mahrez is still understood to be Roma’s primary transfer target, despite the Serie A side also having an interest in Manchester City’s Samir Nasri.

After the win at Luton, new Foxes No.2 Michael Appleton said: “Riyad’s been first class.

“He’s come in, he’s got on with it and worked hard in training.”
