IT’S SILVER THEN BEER FOR PEATY
GREAT BRITAIN closed out the World Championships on a high after they won a superb silver in the men’s 4x100m medley relay.
The quartet of Chris Walker-Hebborn, Adam Peaty, James Guy and Duncan Scott (above) settled for second in a British record 3min 28.95sec.
Peaty (right), who has enjoyed a stellar time in Hungary having claimed double gold in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, played a crucial role.
Britain were in seventh place before the 22-year-old dived in for the second leg – but Peaty put in a monumental effort of 56.91sec to hand over in first. However, American superstar Caeleb Dressel swam a blistering two laps of butterfly and pulled away from his rivals. The US won gold in 3:27.91 with Dressel taking his seventh gold of the championships. The result on the final day of competition meant Britain finished second in the medal table. It also gave Peaty his third gong of the championships and the City of Derby star said: “I’m not going to be happy until we get that gold but I’m going to take a break.
“You’ve got to celebrate in style, chilling with your mates, a few beers – stuff I can’t do when I’m training.”
There was less success in the women’s 4x100m medley relay after Kathleen Dawson, Sarah Vasey, Charlotte Atkinson and Freya Anderson came home seventh.
Max Litchfield broke the Commonwealth record in the men’s 400m individual medley yet still finished fourth.
