Hague backs Hammond’s Brexit plea
FORMER Tory leader William Hague says only a transitional deal with the EU can stop “disaster”.
He backed Chancellor Philip Hammond’s plan to extend membership of the single market and customs union for up to three years after we leave in 2019 as a free trade deal is agreed.
His comments follow a bitter Cabinet row over how abruptly Britain should break off its relationship with Europe.
“There is potential for Brexit to become the greatest economic, diplomatic and constitutional muddle in the modern history of the UK,” Lord Hague said. He added: “Philip Hammond, deserves great credit for... a plan to rescue Brexit from approaching disaster.”
