1957: Wales international John Charles moved from Leeds to Juventus for £65,000. 2004: Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes announced his retirement. 2008: Michael Vaughan stood down as England Test captain, with Kevin Pietersen taking on both roles. 2009: Bath rugby players Michael Lipman, Alex Crockett and Andrew Higgins were suspended for nine months after failing to submit to drugs tests. 2012: There were Olympic gold medals for British rowers Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins and cyclists Victoria Pendleton (keirin) and Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Steven Burke and Peter Kennaugh (team pursuit).
