Some 90% of homes have internet, up from 61% a decade ago, but a fifth of those with no access felt they didn’t have the skills to go online. The Office for National Statistics’ survey also showed just 27% of over 65s use social media, compared to 96% of those aged 16 to 24.
The Government announced a digital strategy in March to help adults lacking core online skills. Nevertheless, 51% of those over 65 now use computers daily, up from 9% in 2006.

And 77% shop online, up from 53% in 2008.
