500 jobs to go as plant moves abroad
FIVE hundred jobs are to be lost under plans to close a “highly profitable” plant making parts for commercial vehicles.
Delphi Diesel Systems will scale down its site in Sudbury, Suffolk, and close it in 2020.
The Unite union claimed the US owners plan to move work to Romania, where labour is cheaper and subsidies are greater.
Its assistant general secretary for manufacturing Tony Burke said: “The news from Suffolk reinforces the need for a robust industrial strategy to be activated immediately so these highly skilled jobs remain in the UK.”
Last week Business Secretary Greg Clark set out plans to boost manufacturing and secure high-tech jobs in the UK. But Unite said it had come too late to save the jobs in Suffolk. It added that the plant is “highly profitable” and there is no need for it to shut.
