NEYMAR DEAL SCARES WARNOCK
Burton Albion v Cardiff Kick-off 3pm
NEIL WARNOCK admits he finds the explosion of money in football “frightening”.
The veteran manager, 68, begins his 50th year in the game when he takes Cardiff to Burton today.
Football has changed dramatically since Warnock started as a player in 1967, but he says you need more than just cash to thrive in the Championship.
“When I look back on my career, it’s unbelievable how the game has gone. The money is frightening because you don’t really know where it’s going to end,” Warnock (left) said.
“My first signing was a guy called Andy Lodge. I talked him into coming to Gainsborough Trinity for £20 a week. Now Neymar is going for £200million.
“It has a follow through in all the divisions – your £2m player is £10m, and your £10m player is £20m. But money can cause problems.
“Spending £20m on two strikers means Middlesbrough will be the favourites to go up, but I don’t envy them. I don’t worry if I haven’t got that sort of money.”
