1970: Manchester United became the first team in British football to win a competitive penalty shoot-out. Their Watney Cup semifinal against Hull stood at 1-1 after 90 minutes before United came through 4-3 on penalties, George Best scoring the first spot-kick.
2003: Yorkshire and England fast bowler Darren Gough announced his retirement from Test cricket.
2009: Sunderland signed striker Darren Bent from Tottenham in a £10million deal.
