PICNIC PARADISE

Our fave spots for an open-air feast

- BY AMY-CLARE MARTIN mirrornews@mirror.co.uk

THE pick of Britain’s picnic places has been decided, after 98% said unpacking a hamper of goodies is a favourite summer treat.

A Welsh beach was voted the top spot for a family spread.

Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower Peninsula, South Wales, got the nod for its sandy beaches and spectacular scenery.

Opera star Katherine Jenkins, who grew up nearby, said: “I take friends there whenever I’m home and every time I’m struck by the magic of it again. It still takes my breath away.

“There’s a bit of everything: the sea, the cliffs, the salt marshes, a stream curling down to the sea.”

The runner-up was Padley Gorge in the Peak District, Derbyshire, where the woodland valley and babbling brook make it an idyllic place to throw down your tartan rug.

In third place was another Welsh beauty spot, Aberporth in Cardigan Bay.

Some 85% of us will have a picnic at least once over the summer holidays, the survey for DisneyLife reveals.

The majority prefer making their picnics from scratch.

More than a third of families are prepared to travel for more than an hour to enjoy an al-fresco meal.

A dedicated 18% will drive for two hours to reach the perfect location. Yet some of our best spots are closer to home, with three city green spaces – Roundhay Park in Leeds, the Kyoto Garden in Holland Park and Richmond Park in London, in the top 10.

Chiara Cipriani, from DisneyLife who commissioned the survey, said: “We hope this list of perfect picnic spots will encourage families to go on an adventure.”

Creative food blogger and mum Grace Hall added: “My kids and I love trying out new places for a picnic, and the locations on the list have certainly given me some ideas for fresh places to try out.”
