Stand-off over Brexit strategy

-

It is good that Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer says Labour will fight the Brexit Bill and deny Theresa May “pairing” arrangements to help keep Britain in the single market for a time after we leave the EU (Mirror, August 3).

If the Tories wish to rule with a minority then let them work hard. Labour can decide whether to put on a three-line whip at any time, while the Tories will have to have a three-line whip all the time - and the DUP MPs will have to attend the Commons every day if they are to succeed in getting legislation through Parliament. Roy McCabe, Newport, Gwent What right does Sir Keir Starmer have to frustrate efforts to leave the EU? The vote was in favour of leaving. If we have to put up with economic uncertainty then it’s worth it to be able to rule ourselves and take back control of our borders. Ian Smith, Fleetwood, Lancs Some people voted to leave the EU because they didn’t like all the regulations coming from Brussels. But those rules are there to protect us. The issues involved in leaving the EU are coming to light and the Tories don’t know how to deal with them. When the facts are laid bare, the people should get the chance to vote in a second referendum. A vote was taken and the result was to leave the EU but some want a referendum on the terms of Brexit. What a laugh.

It’s time we looked at this positively and accepted it’s going to be a wonderful future. The EU negotiators know that when we show how successful we are once we’re out, the EU in its present form will collapse and not before time. H J Powers, Mansfield, Notts So, Brexit is going ahead with no clear plan from this Tory Government. I strongly believe that once all the details of Brexit are finalised, it should be put to the people for another vote to approve what our Government has agreed to.

After all, we are the people of this country and we should have the final say on any deal which will affect us. Phillip Davis, Hengoed, Mid Glam I’m dismayed by those calling for a second EU referendum because this was our only proper chance to vote democratically. It was not the antiquated, first-past-the-post system we use to elect a government, this was democracy working. On the back of all of the commemorations for the soldiers and their families for the 100th anniversary of the bloody battle of Passchendaele, we should remember that these soldiers fought and died for our freedom, our democracy and that we should be ruled by ourselves alone. Ashley J Smith, March, Cambs Considering the chaotic state of the Government with regards to Brexit and the resulting confusion of the general population, isn’t it time for a petition to make the referendum void? We need just a few more signatures than the number of Leave votes. Father David Edwards, Southampton
