FIND CAUSE OF POVERTY

-

I’m advocating war. A war against poverty. Why? Wars are expensive, yet governments find a way to pay for them.

The First World War saw Britain’s national debt climb from £650m to £7.4bn, while World War II saw it grow to £24.7bn.

I’m not calling for violence, but the UK is in a state of emergency. I want an all-party effort to get to the roots of poverty, to dismantle it and solve it. Why not run into debt and change the UK for the better? Making poverty historical is a price worth paying. John Bird MBE, House of Lords Thank you for the story about the Fiona Gardens care home in Manchester and its Reminiscence Room. (August 2). I hope this idea is used by other homes. I have family and friends in homes where they get little stimulation – as though the homes are just there to rake in their excessive fees. I’m going to write and congratulate them on such a fantastic idea. Paul Hardy, Leicester What is wrong with people that they desecrate a grave? It is heartbreaking for the family of Sally Anne Bowman that they’ve had to exhume her ashes because of sick vandals (Mirror, August 3). These scumbags need taking to task, but with British law they would probably only get a slap on the wrist. Barbara Lavelle, Wirral, Merseyside
