Mum’s £1.7k payout over bills blunder

- BY SAM FERGUSON

A PENSIONER won a £1,695 refund after a meter reading blunder meant she was being charged for twice the gas she used.

Susan Strafford, 66, shivered through three winters terrified of her gas bills.

The mum-of-one was being charged in imperial cubic feet despite the meter being switched over to metric cubic metres.

Susan said: “I’d go to bed early because it was warmer. I was worried I’d be unable to put the heating or hot water on.”

She switched suppliers in a bid to lower her bills at her Sheffield home.

After contacting the ombudsman, she was paid back £870 by OVO and £825 by NPower. Susan said: “If there’s something wrong, have a look, it could be imperial or metric.”
