It’s Make or Break crime

on last night’s telly

- IAN HYLAND

Ever ones to spot an opportunity, Channel 5 attempted to fill the hole left by ITV2’s Love Island last night.

Unfortunately, I fear Britain’s grubbiest terrestrial channel lived up to the cheap and tacky side of its reputation with Make Or Break?

Whatever your suspicions about Love Island contestants, at least there is some kind of progression in its format. A bunch of attractive singles are thrown together to see if they can find love. Make Or Break appears to be the opposite. Warring couples – possibly plucked from a local Wetherspoons mid-row – are sent to a beachside paradise to see if their relationships can be saved. I suppose Channel 5’s hope was that viewers would become so emotionally involved with these contestants that they’d begin to root for them.

In which case, the production team really should have cast some likeable contestants. Half of the 16 on show here made me want to hit the mute button within seconds.

I’m aware that there is a market for these kind of shouty and confrontational reality shows.

However, Make Or Break will run after Celebrity Big Brother every week night for two weeks.

Can anyone stomach two hours of brainless noise every night?
