QUAIL HUNTER

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

RORY McILROY admits he wants to triumph at the US PGA to delay Jordan Spieth from completing a Grand Slam of Majors.

McIlroy, 28, has gone three years without a Major and needs to win the Masters in April next year for his clean sweep of golf’s biggest prizes.

Open champion Spieth (above) will complete the Grand Slam before the Northern Irishman if he can triumph at Quail Hollow this week.

“Obviously Jordan has a great chance at completing a career Grand Slam, which would be huge for the game,” McIlroy (right) said. “Tiger was able to do it at 24. Jordan has a great chance to do it at the same age, which is historic. “My chance doesn’t come until April next year in the Masters, but if Jordan plays better, then I take my hat off to him. “He is great for the sport and I sent him a text after he won The Open telling him that. It would be nice if both of us did it in 2018, but we’ll see how it goes.”
