The US dropped its second atom bomb on Japan, in Nagasaki, killing 74,000. Japan surrendered six days later, ending the Second World War.

Actress Sharon Tate, 26, and four friends were murdered at her Hollywood home by followers of hippy cult leader Charles Manson.
