The US dropped its second atom bomb on Japan, in Nagasaki, killing 74,000. Japan surrendere­d six days later, ending the Second World War.

Actress Sharon Tate, 26, and four friends were murdered at her Hollywood home by followers of hippy cult leader Charles Manson.
