Brit lost in bush saved by camels... and Bear
RUNNING ON Jogger PAIR Debbie and Anthony A BRITISH tourist lost in the Australian Outback for three days survived thanks to Bear Grylls – and by following wild camels.
Anthony Collis, 32, got separated from his girlfriend after a row when their car became stuck in sand.
He saved his life by burying himself in the sand during the freezing nights, a technique he learned on TV watching Bear Grylls. He ate bugs and followed camels to areas where fruit and flowers grew.
Rescuers found builder Anthony, – sunburned and dehydrated from the 34C heat – after his girlfriend Debbie Blomfield raised the alarm.
Anthony and Debbie, 39, from Westbury, Wilts, were halfway into a 2,500-mile trip when they had to abandon their vehicle in remote Pilbara in north-west Australia, between Darwin and Perth.
His grandfather Bernard Collis revealed Anthony was “lucky to be alive”, adding: “Anthony followed camels and found fruit which was why he didn’t get too dehydrated – he was sucking the juice.
“He cut through the bush thinking it was a short cut. His feet were badly cut after he lost his flip flops and he was very disorientated when they found him.”
Debbie walked for five miles to a mining camp, where she reported Anthony missing.
Helicopters and Aboriginal trackers eventually found Anthony less than two miles from his vehicle.
