JUAN DOES WHAT MATAS

-

Last season, Manchester United’s Juan Mata shocked us all by saying that he and his fellow Premier League players were paid ridiculous money.

Now, the same player has pledged to donate 1% of his salary to Common Goal, which supports deprived children in 120 countries (Mirror, August 5).

I hope other players take up his challenge and follow his example.

Just think what good could be done to raise money for the victims of the tragedies of Manchester and Grenfell Tower if the Premier League players donated just one week’s wages. I never thought I’d need to write in praise of a Man United player, but Mata is special – a footballer with a conscience. At present they seem to be thin on the ground. Eric Millward, Stoke-on-Trent
