Travelodge is celebratin­g the opening of its fifth hotel in York by releasing 15,000 rooms for £35 at travelodge.co.uk. York Layerthorp­e is the company’s 547th hotel and makes Travelodge the biggest branded hotel provider in Yorkshire’s county seat.

The number of payments made using cards soared to 1.4 billion in June, a record high and up 12% over the past year. A total of £57.1billion was spent, up 7% on June last year, and the average value of a purchase via plastic was £41.36, according to trade body UK Finance. Contactles­s payments accounted for 34% of all card transactio­ns, while 13% were made online.

Nationwide Building Society has chopped rates on some of its two, three and five-year fixed-rate mortgages. Two-year deals now start at 1.29% with a £999 fee, or 1.69% with no fee on 40% deposits. Rates on three-year fixes have been reduced by 0.1% with loans on 15% deposits starting at 1.74%, £999 fee. Five-year fixes start at 2.09% with a £999 fee or 2.29% fee-free.
