JED STEER was the Aston Villa hero as they survived an Essex monsoon.

The keeper earned the thanks of his team-mates (right) for saving a penalty and then made a great stop from Sammie Szmodics at the death. Villa looked to have weathered the storm inside 19 minutes. Scott Hogan put them in front and Steer blocked Mikael Mandron’s spotkick, before a Frankie Kent own-goal made it two. Kent pulled one back for the lively U’s.
