£40m Halle: I lived in shelter as struggling actress
HALLE Berry has revealed she lived in a homeless shelter as an impoverished actress.
The 50-year-old, now thought to be worth more than £40million, found herself on the streets in New York after leaving Ohio to bid to find fame. And she was devastated when her mother refused to help out by lending her cash.
She said: “That was rough. I called my mother and asked her to send me some money, and she said no. That led to a year of not speaking but that’s probably one of the best things she did for me.
“She said, ‘If you want to be there, then you work it out’. Giving up was never an option.
“Shelter life was part of figuring it out for a minute until I could get a waitressing job. Then I got a bartending job and until I could figure that out, that’s what I did.”
Halle, a mother of two, is the only black actress to have won the Best Actress Oscar, which she scooped in 2002 for Monster’s Ball.
