David Tennant says Jodie Whittaker taking over as Doctor Who will take the series to a “whole new level”.

The actor said his Broadchurch co-star called him after landing the gig last month, before it became public.

And David, who quit in 2010, said having a woman lead is “irrelevant”.

David, who was the 10th Doctor, said: “I am delighted. I know her very well and she is a mate of mine.
