Is Jacob plotting a bid to become top Mogg?
JACOB Rees-Mogg wants to be the next Prime Minister, it was claimed yesterday.
Pals say the posh Tory is biding his time and believes growing party support could propel him to Downing Street.
When asked by the Mirror, the MP did not deny hoping to succeed Theresa May, though he insisted he backs the PM.
He said: “I support Mrs May unequivocally and it would be absurd for a backbench MP to covet the leadership. I am not, therefore, a candidate.”
It came after right-wing US academic Ted Malloch claimed Mr Rees-Mogg had “indicated” he wants to be considered for the leadership “when the time comes”.
Only 29% of voters want Mrs May to see out her whole Parliamentary term, a BMG Research poll found.
Mr Rees-Mogg was second favourite to succeed Mrs May in a poll of Tories last week, beaten by Brexit Secretary David Davis.
Mr Davis was called “the next Prime Minister” by Alex Salmond as he joined the ex-Scottish First Minister on stage in Edinburgh yesterday.
