Owner saves tortoise with the kiss of life

- BY ADAM ASPINALL

A DYING tortoise was saved by its owner, who gave it mouth-to-mouth.

John Fletcher feared 45-year-old Freda had drowned when he found her in his garden pond.

The retired postman said: “It was looking dead and limp. It was in the pond at least an hour.

“I decided to put my mouth around the head and give a few short blows.

“I detected movement so I warmed it up with a hairdryer, massaged its legs and neck, and after another hour it gasped and opened its eyes.

“I think maybe the cold water made her shut down and not breathe so fast.”

Freda has recovered and is back to nibbling lettuce.

John, from Tuffley, Gloucester, now plans to fence off the pond.
