May to visit Japan as North Korean tensions ratchet up

THERESA May will jet into Japan later this month amid mounting tensions in the region over the North Korea crisis.

The Prime Minister will meet Japanese PM Shinzo Abe after missile tests by Kim Jong-un’s regime were fired into the sea near Japan.

They will also discuss a postBrexit trade deal, with industry chiefs flying out with Mrs May.

But the three-day trip beginREGIO­NAL TALKS Theresa May ning on August 30 is likely to be dominated by the war of words between Kim and Donald Trump as intelligen­ce suggested North Korea was developing nuclear weapons that could hit the US. The US President warned of “fire and fury” after the North threatened to target the US territory of Guam. South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in yesterday urged the US to prevent war, but North Korea said conflict could “only be turned into nuclear war”.
