1980s

It was the decade of excess: Big shoulder pads, big dresses, big hair and Michael Douglas telling the world that “greed is good”.

And when it came to pin-ups, they weren’t just big, they were almost Amazonian.

At just under 6ft, Elle “The Body” Macpherson became a favourite with US mag Sports Illustrated, and along with 5ft 9in Cindy Crawford and the “Trinity” of Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington, she helped usher in the dawn of the supermodels.

They were all tall, athletic and famed for their long pins. But they were also healthy sizes – a look that was far more achievable for average women.

Cindy insists that she, Linda and Christy were all a size 10, while Naomi was an 8.

They also had curves – all a B cup or above.

The trend towards athletic bodies exploded in the 80s with the boom of video tape aerobics across the globe from the likes of Jane Fonda. CURVES Naomi and Cindy
