ARE THERE RULES ABOUT TRADING AT HOME?

- Suzy, by email

Dear Biz

I’m thinking of running a business from my home. Is there anything I need to do officially before I can do this?

Biz replies

That will depend on what type of business you intend to set up.

If you are carrying stock, or will have customers coming to your home, you will need to have the right insurances in place to protect both when they are there. If you plan to cook produce to sell you will need to contact your local council and get your kitchen assessed to ensure you have the correct cleaning and storage in place. Also check the small print of any existing home insurance policy.
