Your Royal seal of disapproval
#Kevin Maguire is quite right to question the point of the monarchy (Mirror, Aug 14). I have never seen any indication that the Queen cares very much about the fate of her so-called subjects.
Taxpayers are forking out £369million to renovate just one of her homes, while the NHS is being starved of funds, children are going to school hungry and thousands of people are living on the streets.
Millions of Britons live in abject poverty and the situation is getting worse. If the Queen cared, she would have refused that £369million and dug into her own reserves. The idea we decide our head of state by accident of birth is ludicrous. Let the monarchy die with the Queen.
After all, why is this one dysfunctional family called Windsor considered to be more important than your family or mine?
#I understand Kevin Maguire’s call for a republic but it’s just as much a fantasy as believing we can have true democracy. We would have to have a president as head of state and would end up with a careerist from the political arena. Such a person would be likely to be far more forward than Prince Charles with his secret letters to Cabinet ministers. We could end up with a retiring figure like the Queen, but we’d be more likely to end up with someone like Trump.
#I applaud Kevin Maguire for having the bottle to say what the majority of people in this country think today. Many people say that the royals bring in millions of pounds through tourism, but how many visitors get even a glimpse of them? They come to our country because of the history here.
#Would people like to see a Trump-style president as our head of state, or even President Boris? The Royal Family is British and we are the only country to have such pomp and pageantry which attracts millions from abroad.
People complain about the royals costing money but a president would still have a large house, staff, security and limousines.
I’m all for keeping the Royal Family, it’s part of our history and prestige.

Anyone in the forces will tell you that the Queen thinks everything smells of paint. When you join up you realise that the Royal Family is nothing more than a drain on taxpayers’ money, the same as MPs.
#Kevin Maguire’s comments on the Royal Family are disgraceful. The amount of tourism they attract is worth tens of millions of pounds and is a major asset to the UK. Kevin spouts tired views – perhaps a spell in the Tower of London might be a good idea!
#I personally think the whole idea of a monarchy is an outdated concept. Apparently, the Queen is looking to abdicate which makes Charles the next in line. I’m not a Royalist, but anyone should be king but him. He made Diana’s life hell and I hope he never gets to sit on the throne. Colin Davies Liverpool
