Stunning Trent strike puts Liverpool in dreamland

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

YOUNGSTER Trent Alexander-Arnold celebrated a “dream” Euro debut by firing Liverpool to within touching distance of the Champions League.

The Scouser announced himself as a star in the making by scoring as the Reds took everything Hoffenheim could throw at them.

And Alexander-Arnold, 18, said: “It’s a thing of dreams to make your European debut for your boyhood club and especially to mark it with a goal.

“We’re disappointed with the late goal, but it’s

FROM BACK PAGE good to take a lead back to Anfield. I got egged on to take the free-kick. I had the confidence to take it. We know it won’t be an easy game, but we have strategies to beat them.”

Captain Jordan Henderson was not surprised by AlexanderArnold’s performance. He said: “Trent is brilliant. He was outstanding last season and he has come back and gone up a level in pre-season.

“The free-kick is no coincidence, he has been doing them every day in training – that is why he is on them. We’re disappointed with the goal we conceded, but overall we have to be pleased with the result.

“We knew this would be a tough game, Hoffenheim are a strong team. Si (Mignolet) made a great save from the penalty, but we grew in confidence.”

The teenager’s brilliant free kick gave Jurgen Klopp’s team a vital away goal, which was doubled by a fortunate strike from James Milner via Havard Nordtveit. A goal from Mark Uth means Liverpool cannot be complacent in the second leg.
