22m election votes ‘wasted’ due to our ‘broken system’
SOME 22 million votes were “wasted” in June’s election, a study claims.
Nearly seven in 10 ballots made no difference to the result, which led to Jeremy Corbyn stripping Theresa May of a Commons majority.
But the Electoral Reform Society claims 6.5 million voted tactically as their favourite choice would have no influence. Another finding was that if just GOOD RESULT Jeremy Corbyn 0.0016% had voted differently, the Tories would have a majority. The ERS also blasted our first-pastthe-post system, designed to avoid hung parliaments but which has delivered two in three elections. Chief executive Darren Hughes said: “The majority of votes are going to waste, with millions still stuck in the electoral black hole of winnertakes-all – meaning a diverse and shifting public having to work around a broken two-party system.”
