£7K OFF AS FORD JOINS SCRAPPAGE CAR WARS

US giant starts ‘anti-pollution drive’

FORD has joined the scrappage rush with a scheme that offers up to £7,000 off a new motor.

The offer is available to owners of any make of car or van – be they petrol or diesel – that went on the road before December 2009.

The exact discount depends on the dealership and whether the purchase is on finance. But from September 1 to the end of the year, drivers can get from £2,000 to £7,000 off the list price of a new Ford car or van.

Drivers with old bangers benefit the most as the scrappage is instead of the trade-in value of the vehicle.

The US giant has gone a step further than rival BMW, the first car-maker to launch a money-off scheme targeting older diesels.

Volkswagen is poised to launch a scrappage scheme for older diesels here and already has a scheme in Germany offering up to £9,000 off a new motor.

Ford said it aims to get the most polluting vehicles off the road. It quoted figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showing 19.3million cars with preEuro 5 emissions levels – those that qualify for its scrappage scheme – are on UK roads.

Ford of Britain chairman Andy Barratt said: “Removing generations of the most polluting vehicles will have the most immediate effect on air quality and this scrappage scheme aims to do that. We don’t believe incentivising sales of new cars goes QUIDS IN far enough and we will ensure all trade-in vehicles are scrapped.”

The scrappage discount itself is worth £2,000 per new vehicle. But Ford is extending a separate moneyoff deal that was scheduled to run in September so that it continues until the end of this year. It means someone buying a Ford B-Max, starting at £17,945, can get up to £3,500 off the list price. The top savings are on Ford Transit vans, with up to £7,000 off a list price starting at £24,415. That includes the £2,000 scrappage and a promotional discount of up to £5,000. The clamour to launch scrappage schemes comes after new vehicle sales began to fall. And the Government has said new diesel and petrol vehicles will be banned from 2040 to tackle air pollution.
