Boy, 9, died after eating fish fingers

- BY JANE TYLER

A BOY of nine died after having an allergic reaction to fish fingers in his school dinner, an inquest heard.

Mohammed Ismaeel Ashraf wore a lanyard with his allergies, but catering staff only knew he could not eat dairy products.

The youngster collapsed at Al-Hijrah School, in Birmingham, in March, and died later in hospital.

Catering boss Deborah Park told the city’s coroner: “When I looked in the care plan after his death, I was shocked to discover he was allergic to fish.”

The inquest heard a 999 call in which the operator was told by school staff they were having difficulty finding his adrenaline pen.

Coroner Louise Hunt said the delay was central to how Ismaeel died.

The hearing continues.
