Clinical or cynical?

BBC1, 9pm GOOGLE images has a lot to answer for. A quick search online and Dr Andy Brenner realised there was something very dodgy going on with his latest fling, Dr Ally Sutton.

His first clue was when someone called her phone asking for Cath Hardacre.

Always a red flag when the woman you’re dating has a mystery persona. Then he saw the photo online of Ally – except that it was Cath (Jodie Whittaker), a nurse, not a doctor.

Even Jodie Whittaker is more of a doctor than Cath Hardacre.

So now what? At first we were slightly put off by an outlandish plot, but we are now thoroughly hooked and waiting for the big reveal.

Tonight’s episode picks up exactly where we left off, with Andy (the very easy-on-the-eye Emun Elliott) staring, slack-jawed, at the computer and Ally/Cath en route to visit her ailing father.

While she is with her dad, Andy drags himself away from Google to chase a reference for Ally. “And you’re quite sure... she definitely left the country?” he says into his mobile. We feel quite sorry for him really.

Not knowing quite what to do, he bursts into the office of boss Brigitte (the entertaining Sharon Small), geared up to tell her what he knows. But there’s a struggle with his conscience. Later on, once reunited with Ally, Andy says: “I think we need to be honest with each other, don’t you?” Silence. “Are you free this weekend?” Cue every TV viewer silently screaming into their cushions. He wants to take her and Molly away, and now we’re a bit worried...
