1964: BBC’s Match of the Day television programme made its first broadcast, showing highlights of Arsenal’s match with Liverpool.
2006: Sprinter Justin Gatlin was banned for up to eight years by the United States Anti-Doping Agency, after failing a drugs test for the second time in his career. It was later reduced to four years and Gatlin won bronze in the 100 metres at the 2012 Olympics, silver in 2016, and silver in the same event at the 2013 and 2015 World Championships. He won gold at the 2017 World Championships.
2008: Usain Bolt claimed his third gold medal of the Beijing Olympics as Jamaica won the 4x100m relay final.
