Premier League goal No.200 for Wayne as City are frustrated before Sterling saves a point

- BY JOHN CROSS

WAYNE ROONEY grabbed his 200th Premier League goal on a night of frustration for Manchester City.

SHOUT OF THIS WORLD Rooney was overjoyed to notch his 200th Prem strike before Sterling (below) equalised

The Everton striker hit the dramatic opener and only a late leveller from Raheem Sterling rescued a point for the title favourites.

City full-back Kyle Walker was sent off for two bookings in the space of three minutes which left Pep Guardiola incensed.

The £50million summer signing from Tottenham was booked for a foul after 42 minutes on Leighton Baines and got his marching orders shortly afterwards for a push on Dominic Calvert-Lewin. It

YOU can take Wayne Rooney out of Everton – but you can’t take Everton out of Rooney.

His celebration said everything about the Scouser’s passion for his first love, his first club and return as a hero on Merseyside.

Never mind it was his landmark 200th Premier League goal – he is now only second behind Alan Shearer in the goalscoring charts.

This was all about Rooney’s renaissance until Raheem Sterling’s equaliser. Needless to say, after Rooney’s goal, the TV cameras immediately panned to England boss Gareth Southgate, sat in the stands alongside his assistant Steve Holland at the Etihad.

It is hard to imagine that Rooney will be recalled when Southgate names his squad on Thursday, but this was about Everton rather than the Three Lions.

Rooney’s second coming saw him score the winner against Stoke at Goodison Park last week before producing another memorable display against one of the title favourites. Rooney breathed fire throughout the side assembled by Ronald Koeman (left), his passion and determination driving them forward and his attitude rubbing off on the youngsters. Jordan Pickford was excellent in goal, while Phil Jagielka was magnificent in a five-man defence – finally breached by Sterling. Jagielka rolled back the years, making brilliant sliding tackles and heading off the line. Tom Davies, Mason Holgate and Dominic CalvertLewin are all rookies with a great deal of promise and Everton look a force to be reckoned with.

Michael Keane is a decent addition and new £50million signing Gylfi Sigurdsson came off the bench.

At 31, Rooney was an eye-catching signing, something of a risk. But the energy is still there. And it will propel Everton forward.
