PREMATURE JOCK ELATION

FRANKIE DETTORI suffered a case of premature jock elation as Marsha and Luke Morris (below) staged a last-gasp smash and grab to lift a thrilling Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes.

Dettori raised his arm in celebration as American speedball Lady Aurelia crossed the line – but the photo-finish revealed the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Marsha and Morris, carrying the colours of the Elite Racing Club syndicate, had won.

“When Frankie put his arm up I was gutted, as I thought he’d won — then someone said, ‘Congratulations!’ to me, and it turned into jubilation,” said Morris, 28, gaining his first domestic top-level triumph.

Shaking his head as he trudged back to the weighing room, Dettori said: “I’m in shock – I thought I’d won a neck.”

Lady Aurelia’s trainer Wesley Ward added: “That was so tough to take.”
